Free Tibet Campaign is represented by over local 40 groups across the country. These are run independently by members who organise meetings, sponsored events and other activities through which they raise awareness about Tibet in their area.
Local groups are vital in spreading the message to as many people as possible and help the campaign by staging local protests, recruiting new members, lobbying their MPs and local businesses and organising cultural events to help raise funds for the campaign.
Joining a group is a great way to meet other like-minded people who care about human rights and want to do something to make a positive difference. From film screenings to sponsored sky diving, you can help free Tibet, and you can help even more as part of a group.

We support our groups by sending them materials such as leaflets, magazines and flags, and list them for new members and supporters to get in touch.

What do our local groups do? "Tibet Support Group Grampian started in 1993 when the Dalai Lama visited Aberdeen to receive an Honorary Doctorate at the University. The Group both campaigns for Tibet (particularly with urgent actions provided by FTC), and rasies funds for Tibetan charities. We hold a number of events through the year - talks and films, campaign stalls, street collections, etc. Over the past 15 years we have raised more than £25,000 to support health, education and social projects both in Tibet and in the exile community." -Liz Lindsey, Grampian local group |
Fundraising events
Standing up for Tibet doesn't have to be difficult; it can also be a lot of fun! Our local groups organise events which range from sponsored sports to gigs, exhibitions and arts and crafts competitions, and are advertised in the events section of this site so that other supporters in the area can join in.
Group fundraising is particularly effective when marking significant days on the Tibetan calendar such as Tibetan new year (Losar), Uprising Day in March and Day for Tibet in October. Many groups are also active throughout the year as they meet up for walks, talks and local campaigning.

Awareness building
As well as fundraising events, our groups take part in awareness building in their area. This can include setting up stalls at fetes, fairs and cultural events, doing presentations at schools and community centres, screening Tibet-related films and writing to local newspapers, MPs and other public figures about Tibet.
The more people who know about the situation in Tibet, the more effective the campaigning of organisations such as Free Tibet becomes. Local groups are a vital part of the drive to make sure the world does not turn its back on Tibet!
